The Registration Requirement in Austria

Everyone who takes up residence in Austria must register at the relevant registration authority within 3 days. The result: the Meldezettel (registration certificate).

What You Need

  • Meldezettel form: Free on wien.gv.at
  • Landlord's signature: Your landlord must sign
  • Valid photo ID: Passport or identity card
  • For non-EU citizens: Residence permit or visa

Where to Register?

At a registration service point of the MA 62: City Hall (main location), district offices, or Am Schöpfwerk.

Tip: Use online appointment booking via wien.gv.at!

Process

  1. Fill out the form and have it signed by your landlord
  2. Book an online appointment or go directly to the service point
  3. Present your ID and form
  4. The registration certificate is issued immediately — free of charge!

What Do You Need the Meldezettel For?

Opening a bank account, mobile phone contract, library card, social insurance, and much more. Always keep a copy!
